Pamela Speight

Pamela Speight is a recently retired Faculty member of VIU Visual Art, and taught drawing and painting from 1999-2024. She also served as curator of the Nanaimo Art Gallery for five years when it occupied our current View Gallery site.

Pamela is also a Visual Artist who works in a variety of media, including painting with oil on canvas and linen, mixed media on wood, and charcoal and oil stick on paper.

Speight creates rich textures by applying multiple layers of materials in her individual works, and employs a selective covering and revealing strategy that results in subtle colour and shading variations.

Her work could be categorized as sensual abstraction, inspired by themes of desire, instinct, memory, and nature, while inviting the viewer to celebrate the enigma of life.

Pamela completed a BFA at Emily Carr University and MFA at Ohio State University.

Her works are held in many collections, including the Burnaby Art Gallery, the Richmond Art Gallery, and the Canada Council Art Bank.

The VIEW Gallery is pleased to present this selection of her works spanning the last few decades.

View Gallery Entryway

The View Gallery is Vancouver Island University's art gallery on VIU's Nanaimo campus which is built on the traditional unceded territory of the Snuneymuxw peoples.

The Gallery presents a spectrum of visual art and design, made by professional artists, students, and community members. A non-commercial site, the gallery presents a mixture of programming and art events that range from curated solo and group exhibitions, touring exhibitions, and annual showcases of student art. The VIEW Gallery is run and staffed by faculty members and students in the Department of Art and Design, within the Faculty of Art and Humanities.

The View Gallery and the VIU community acknowledges and thanks the Snuneymuxw,  Quw’utsun, Tla’amin, Snaw-naw-as and Qualicum First Nation on whose unceded traditional lands we teach, learn, research, live and share knowledge.
